Lepidozamia peroffskyana is one of two species in the genus Lepidozamia, the other being L. hopei. L. peroffskyana is the more common species in cultivation. Lepidozamia's originate from Australia. They grow in protected forests, mostly in shaded and wet conditions. In their natural environment they can attain a trunk height over 20 feet tall. It's leaves can grow up to 10 feet in length, with a beautiful "arching" look, and a dark glossy green color. Leaflets emerge from the top of the rachis (leaf stem), which is a helpful in identification. Another feature that stands out is it's lack of spines. Most species of cycads have some type of spines or prickles, but L. peroffskyana has none, which makes this cycad very "gardener friendly". Cones are very distinctive, with the female cone being large and dramatic, weighing up to 60 pounds! As a result seeds are also very large, approx. 2.75 inches in length. Male cones are also unique, being up to 30 inches long with a open spiral pattern.
Lepidozamia peroffskyana is an excellent plant for the garden and container growing. It has that rich tropical conservatory look, which makes it a beautiful addition to any garden. Plant in mostly shade or part sun. It can tolerate full sun, but will look yellow and "washed out". Water regularly, however still use a well drained soil for best results. Fertilize regularly to maintain that dark green color. L. peroffskyana will tolerate some frost.
Lepidozamia peroffskyana was one of my first cycads, and is a great beginner plant. It is a must have plant!
