Bench notesCare for this Adenia spinosa 3 Gallon Pot.
A 3-gallon Adenia spinosa with a substantial, spine-armored caudex transitioning to thin twining stems. One of the genus's most architectural species, slow to mature and increasingly difficult to source at this size.
- Light
- Bright, filtered light to half-day direct sun. The caudex prefers some shade in peak summer; the climbing growth wants brighter conditions to harden off properly.
- Water
- Water moderately during active warm-season growth, allowing the top inches to dry between drinks. Adenia rots readily, so err drier than feels right and avoid overhead watering on the caudex.
- Soil
- Mineral-heavy, fast-draining mix: pumice, lava rock, and a small organic component. A wider-than-deep pot suits the species' caudex geometry and reduces standing moisture below the storage organ.
- Dormancy
- Summer growing, winter resting. Expect leaf drop as nights cool. Hold water back almost entirely through the cool months and resume gradually when new growth signals warmth has stuck.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (50°F safe floor, frost-free, cool-tolerant when bone dry).
- Feeding
- Light feeding only, perhaps a balanced fertilizer at quarter strength once a month during peak growth. Adenia respond poorly to overfeeding; the caudex grows on time and water, not nitrogen.
