Bench notesCare for this Dorstenia gigas 8" Pot C.
A mature Dorstenia gigas in an 8-inch pot, with the gnarled, tree-form caudex that has made it the holy grail of the Socotran caudiciforms. Endemic to a single archipelago, slow as cycads, and very rarely available at this size.
- Light
- Bright filtered light. Direct sun scorches the caudex skin and bleaches the foliage; an east-facing window or a shaded greenhouse bench is the sweet spot.
- Water
- Unlike most caudiciforms in this catalog, Dorstenia gigas does not have a hard dormancy in cultivation. Water moderately and consistently when in leaf, easing back but never fully stopping during cooler months.
- Soil
- A more organic mix than typical succulents prefer: 50 percent fine bark or coir, 50 percent pumice. The plant comes from limestone soils with surprising amounts of pocketed humus.
- Dormancy
- No true dormancy. Growth slows below 60°F and the plant may shed older leaves; keep it warmer and slightly damper than you would a Pachypodium during the cool season.
- Hardiness
- USDA 11+ (strictly tropical, 55°F hard floor; a heated greenhouse or interior bright window is the realistic environment for North American collectors).
- Feeding
- Feed lightly year-round when temperatures permit growth. A balanced fertilizer at quarter strength every three to four weeks suits the species' continuous metabolism.
