Bench notesCare for this Operculicarya hyphaenoides 1 Gallon Pot B.
Operculicarya hyphaenoides version B in a 1-gallon pot — different specimen, different branching, same species character. Side-by-side with version C, the variation in caudex shape becomes part of the appeal of buying the photographed plant.
- Light
- Bright direct sun preferred. Acclimate from greenhouse-bright to outdoor-direct over two weeks to avoid leaf scorch on the existing flush.
- Water
- Heavy in heat, dry between drinks. The 1-gallon root volume puts this size in the sweet spot for predictable watering — neither bone-dry-overnight nor stagnant.
- Soil
- Mineral-dominant cactus mix. Pumice or scoria as the base ingredient, with a small fine bark fraction.
- Dormancy
- Cool-season leaf drop. Hold water through dormancy with a token monthly drink.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (45°F dry floor; treat below 50°F as a stress range and protect accordingly).
- Feeding
- Half-strength balanced fertilizer biweekly in active growth. None during dormancy.
- Repotting
- Every two to three years. Use the repot as an opportunity to refine the root flare and lift the soil line slightly.
