Bench notesCare for this Operculicarya hyphaenoides 1 Gallon Pot C.
Operculicarya hyphaenoides at 1-gallon size, version C — the smaller-format sibling of the 1.5-gallon plant in this catalog. The bark character at this size is already well underway: corky, fissured, and unmistakably hyphaenoides.
- Light
- Full sun once acclimated. The leaves color and the bark hardens best with direct exposure; the species genuinely wants the heat.
- Water
- Active-season drinks with thorough dry-down. The smaller pot dries faster than the 1.5-gallon plant; check weekly during peak summer.
- Soil
- 70 percent pumice with 30 percent fine bark. The species roots are dense and fine; they want texture and air more than nutrient.
- Dormancy
- Annual leaf drop in autumn. Hold water through winter except for a small monthly drink to keep fine roots alive.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (45°F dry; brief lower temperatures survivable when well-established and in mineral soil).
- Feeding
- Half strength balanced fertilizer every two to three weeks in summer. None in winter.
- Repotting
- Every two to three years at this size. The species is forgiving of root work; bonsai-style reduction is appropriate.
