Operculicarya hyphaenoides at 1.5-gallon size, version C — the textbook Madagascan pachycaul with corky, knurled bark and a naturally compact, almost bonsai habit. The species is increasingly tightly held; field-collected mature plants are essentially unavailable.
- Light
- Full sun to brightest filtered light. The leaves color up best, and the bark hardens to its characteristic black-brown, only with serious sun exposure.
- Water
- Generous summer drinks; this Operculicarya is thirstier than its dry-country bark suggests. Allow real dry-down before each watering.
- Soil
- A pumice-rich mix with about 30 percent fine bark. The species takes well to bonsai-style media for its lifelong pot culture.
- Dormancy
- Winter-deciduous. The fine compound leaves drop with cool, shorter days; hold water tight through the rest period.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (45°F dry fine; tip dieback below that, no frost).
- Feeding
- Half-strength balanced fertilizer every two to three weeks in summer. None during winter dormancy.
- Repotting
- Every three years. The species responds beautifully to root pruning, which is part of why it is a quiet favorite among caudex bonsai growers.
