Bench notesCare for this Operculicarya pachypus 1 Gallon Pot A.
Operculicarya pachypus at 1-gallon size, version A — the more sculptural of the two Madagascan Operculicarya in this catalog, with thicker primary branches and a more pronounced caudex flare. Sex unconfirmed at this size; can be determined when the plant flowers.
- Light
- Full sun. Pachypus colors and develops best under hard light; under-illumination produces lanky, weak growth that never quite recovers.
- Water
- Generous summer waterings, full dry-down between. Pachypus can take more water than hyphaenoides during active growth — and rewards it with thicker caliper.
- Soil
- Mineral-leaning mix; pumice base, light bark fraction. The species roots want air more than food.
- Dormancy
- Winter-deciduous. Hold water once leaves drop; resume gradually with the next year's bud break.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10a–11 (40°F dry fine; the species is among the cold-tougher Operculicarya).
- Feeding
- Half-strength balanced fertilizer every two weeks in summer. None in winter.
- Repotting
- Every three years. The species accepts root reduction well and is a strong candidate for long-term bonsai-style culture.
