Bench notesCare for this Operculicarya pachypus 1.5 Gallon Pot.
A confirmed female Operculicarya pachypus in 1.5-gallon size — sex is meaningful in the genus because this species is dioecious and only paired plants set fruit. Slow, sculptural, and the favorite Operculicarya of most collectors who can choose.
- Light
- Full sun. Insufficient light produces leggy summer growth and weak winter color; pachypus rewards the brightest spot you can give it.
- Water
- Heavy summer drinks with full dry-down between. The species is more drought-tough than hyphaenoides but flowers better with consistent water in growth.
- Soil
- Pumice-dominant mineral mix; the species roots are fine and intolerant of standing moisture.
- Dormancy
- Winter-deciduous. The compact deciduous leaves drop with shortening days; restrict water to a token monthly drink, no more.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10a–11 (tougher than its bark suggests; 40°F dry fine, brief lower excursions survivable for short periods).
- Feeding
- Half strength balanced fertilizer every three weeks during the warm season.
- Repotting
- Every three years. Reduce roots moderately at each repotting to keep the caudex proportions tight; the species takes well to bonsai-style work.
