Bench notesCare for this Pyrenacantha malvifolia 2 Gallon Pot.
A smaller-format Pyrenacantha malvifolia in a 2-gallon pot, well-rooted and ready for the patient grower who would rather watch the caudex form than buy the silhouette. Younger sibling of the 5-gallon plant in this catalog, and a more accessible entry to the species.
- Light
- Bright filtered light. At this size the plant is still building bark; keep it out of unmodified afternoon sun until the caudex skin firms up.
- Water
- Steady summer watering; the smaller mass dries faster than the larger specimen and benefits from a slightly more attentive schedule. Always with the dry-down between drinks.
- Soil
- Mineral-leaning mix with a useful organic fraction, similar to its larger sibling. The species is forgiving of media as long as drainage is honest.
- Dormancy
- Annual leaf drop in autumn. The smaller caudex is more sensitive to extended drought during dormancy than a mature plant, so a token monthly watering is wise.
- Hardiness
- USDA 11 (55°F floor at this size; younger Pyrenacantha are noticeably less cold-tolerant than mature specimens).
- Feeding
- Half strength balanced fertilizer every three weeks during summer. The plant uses the food: caudex thickening at this stage is real.
