Bench notesCare for this Xerosicyos pubescens 3 Gallon Pot (Zygosicyos pubescens).
Xerosicyos pubescens — also seen as Zygosicyos pubescens — is a Madagascan caudiciform cucurbit with a fattened trunk and fuzzy, climbing seasonal growth. A 3-gallon plant of this species is a substantial collector's piece.
- Light
- Bright filtered light. The pubescent leaves bleach under direct midday sun and the caudex bark dulls; an east or filtered south aspect produces the best color.
- Water
- Steady summer drinks, slowing as autumn cools. The vine appreciates more frequent water than the caudex's appearance suggests; the climbing growth is genuinely thirsty when in leaf.
- Soil
- A balanced mineral-organic mix, around 60/40 in favor of pumice. The species tolerates slightly more humus than most caudiciforms.
- Dormancy
- Drought-deciduous. The vine yellows and drops as the cool season arrives; trim back, hold water, and wait. Spring warmth restarts the cycle.
- Hardiness
- USDA 11 (tropical-leaning, 55°F conservative floor; brief cooler nights tolerated only when fully dry).
- Feeding
- A bloom-and-grow fertilizer at quarter strength every three weeks during active vine growth.
- Repotting
- Every three to four years. Provide a small trellis or wire support so the seasonal vine can twine without flopping back onto the caudex.
