Bench notesCare for this Boswellia popoviana 6" Pot C.
Boswellia popoviana from Socotra, in a 6-inch pot, version C. One of the frankincense relatives — papery peeling bark, aromatic resin, and the unmistakable Socotran island-relict habit. Rarely offered in cultivation at any size.
- Light
- Full sun to brightest filtered light. The species evolved on exposed limestone slopes and resents shade.
- Water
- Moderate summer water with hard dry-down. Boswellia rot fast in lingering moisture; underwater rather than overwater.
- Soil
- Sharply drained mineral mix with a small organic fraction. A wider-than-deep pot suits the species' lateral root habit.
- Dormancy
- Drought-deciduous. Leaves drop with cooler, drier conditions; hold water and let the bark harden. Resume watering only when growth signals warmth has returned.
- Hardiness
- USDA 11+ (strictly tropical, 55°F working floor; the species has no real cold tolerance).
- Feeding
- Quarter to half strength balanced fertilizer monthly during active growth. The species responds modestly to feeding — its growth is paced by sun and water more than nutrient.
- Repotting
- Every three years. Wear gloves; the resin is fragrant and sticky and will be on your hands for a week.
