Professional Nursery Potting Mix — 80% Premium Pumice / 20% Peat
This is the same professional soilless potting mix we use every day in our nursery for the cultivation of cacti, succulents, and other drought-adapted plants. After years of growing plants under nursery conditions, we have settled on a simple but highly effective substrate consisting of 80% premium 3/8” pumice, 20% peat, and Nutricote 270-day controlled-release fertilizer.
And yes, every batch is hand mixed by Cruz with his own blood, sweat, and tears. (Mostly sweat—we hope.)
Unlike conventional potting soil, this is a soilless growing medium. It contains no field soil, topsoil, or mineral loam. Instead, its physical and chemical properties are created through a carefully balanced combination of porous volcanic pumice and high-quality peat.
80% Premium 3/8” Pumice
Pumice forms the structural framework of the mix. Its rigid, highly porous particles create a large proportion of macropore space—the larger pores within a growing medium that drain freely after irrigation and refill with air.
This high air-filled porosity is especially important for cacti and succulents. Roots require oxygen for respiration, and a substrate that remains excessively saturated can create hypoxic conditions that impair root function and favor root-rotting organisms. The coarse 3/8” pumice maintains excellent drainage and gas exchange while resisting the compaction and structural collapse that can occur as organic potting media age.
Pumice itself is also internally porous. Its network of pores can retain a small reservoir of moisture while the larger spaces between particles remain well aerated. This combination provides a favorable balance between water-holding capacity and oxygen availability.
20% Peat
Although drainage is critical, an effective growing medium must also retain enough water and nutrients to support active root growth. The peat fraction provides this balance.
Peat contributes a much greater proportion of micropores—small pore spaces capable of retaining plant-available water against gravity. While the pumice provides drainage and aeration, the peat holds moisture within the root zone between irrigations.
Peat also has a relatively high cation exchange capacity (CEC). Cation exchange sites carry negative charges that can temporarily retain positively charged plant nutrients such as potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and ammonium (NH₄⁺). Rather than allowing these nutrients to move immediately through a highly porous substrate with irrigation water, the organic fraction helps retain them within the root zone where they remain available for plant uptake.
The peat used in our mix also contains a wetting agent, which helps overcome the natural tendency of dry peat to become hydrophobic. This allows irrigation water to penetrate and distribute more evenly throughout the root ball, helping reduce dry pockets and promoting more uniform rewetting.
Nutricote 270-Day Controlled-Release Fertilizer
We incorporate Nutricote 270-day controlled-release fertilizer directly into the mix to provide a consistent nutrient supply throughout the growing season.
Rather than supplying a large amount of soluble fertilizer all at once, Nutricote releases nutrients gradually over approximately 270 days under appropriate growing conditions. This provides sustained access to essential mineral nutrients while reducing the sharp fluctuations in nutrient concentration that can accompany conventional soluble fertilization.
For most nursery production cycles, 270 days effectively covers an entire growing season, providing plants with a steady nutritional foundation from the beginning of active growth through the season.
A Starting Point, Not a Universal Formula
One of the most important principles in plant cultivation is that there is no single perfect soil mix for every grower, plant, or environment. A substrate that performs exceptionally well in one greenhouse may behave very differently on a windowsill, outdoors in a humid climate, or under the care of someone with a different watering schedule.
Temperature, humidity, airflow, container size and material, light intensity, species, root system, and watering frequency all influence how quickly a growing medium dries and how much moisture a plant experiences at the root zone.
For that reason, we encourage growers to treat our nursery mix as an excellent base substrate that can be tailored to their individual growing conditions.
Growers who need greater moisture retention can amend the mix with additional organic material. Those growing in humid conditions, watering frequently, or cultivating particularly rot-sensitive plants may choose to increase the proportion of inorganic material such as pumice, lava rock, gravel, or other suitable mineral amendments.
The goal is not to follow a universal recipe—it is to create the appropriate balance of water retention, drainage, aeration, and nutrient availability for your plants and your growing habits.
Why We Use It
The result is a substrate designed around the fundamental requirements of healthy roots: oxygen, water, nutrients, and physical stability.
The coarse pumice creates drainage, aeration, and long-term structure. The peat supplies moisture retention, microporosity, and cation exchange capacity. Nutricote provides a controlled nutrient supply throughout the growing season.
With 80% mineral material and only 20% organic material, the mix drains rapidly and maintains substantial air-filled pore space after watering, helping reduce the prolonged root-zone saturation that commonly contributes to root and crown rot in drought-adapted plants.
It is a straightforward formulation, but every component serves a specific physical or chemical purpose.
