Bench notesCare for this Dioscorea elephantipes 5 Gallon Pot 3.
A 5-gallon Dioscorea elephantipes, ships bare root, caudex approximately 5.5 inches across. The corked, polygonal plates are forming the species' characteristic geometry; another decade and they harden into the look that justifies the slow.
Full Dioscorea care guide → - Light
- Filtered bright light. Some morning sun helps the seasonal vine; keep the caudex itself out of harsh afternoon exposure to preserve plate definition.
- Water
- Tied entirely to the vine. Water generously when leaves are present; cease completely when they yellow. The caudex stores enough water to survive a careless season, but only one.
- Soil
- 60 percent pumice or scoria with 40 percent screened bark, repotted into terracotta to wick excess moisture. Many established plants thrive in nearly pure mineral mix once the caudex is mature.
- Dormancy
- Predictable annual vine death. Cut at the soil line, hold water, and wait. The cycle in cultivation often runs winter-active in northern hemisphere greenhouses.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10a–11 (bone-dry to 35°F workable; damp at the same temperature kills).
- Feeding
- Quarter strength balanced fertilizer with every third watering during active vine growth.
