Full Dioscorea care guide → - Light
- Bright filtered light at this size. Young Dioscorea are more sensitive to direct sun than mature specimens; harden gradually before any unfiltered exposure.
- Water
- Vine-dependent watering. At this caudex size, the plant cannot survive a long forgotten dry period during dormancy as well as a mature plant; check monthly.
- Soil
- A slightly more organic mix than for adult plants, around 50/50 mineral and bark, encourages the root system to develop quickly.
- Dormancy
- Annual vine die-back; the small caudex follows the cycle reliably. A token watering once a month during dormancy is appropriate at this size.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (45°F floor at this size; younger plants are noticeably less cold-tolerant than mature specimens).
- Feeding
- Half strength balanced fertilizer with every third watering during active vine growth — the plants are still in active caudex-building mode and use the food.
