Bench notesCare for this Gasteria armstrongii variegata 5" Pot 1.
Gasteria armstrongii variegata in a 5-inch pot, plant number one — the more developed of the two specimens in this catalog. Stout, blunt-leaved, with creamy variegation streaking through the dark warty tongues. Slow as Gasteria always are; this size took years.
- Light
- Bright filtered light. Gasteria armstrongii armstrongii burns under direct sun even in habitat; the variegated form burns faster. East-facing exposure or a shaded bench is ideal.
- Water
- Modest, with thorough dry-down. The fat leaves store more water than they look; check the soil before the schedule.
- Soil
- Pumice-dominant mineral mix. The species accepts a touch more organic than most South African succulents; a small bark fraction is welcome.
- Dormancy
- Winter-rainfall species — active in cool months, slowing in summer heat. This is the inverse of most plants in this catalog and the most common source of failure with the species.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10a–11 (40°F dry floor; tolerant of cool nights, sensitive to hot nights with damp roots).
- Feeding
- Quarter strength balanced fertilizer once a month during the cool active season. Avoid feeding through summer heat.
