Bench notesCare for this Gasteria armstrongii variegata 5" Pot A.
Gasteria armstrongii variegata in a 5-inch pot, plant A — the second of two variegated specimens in this catalog. Slightly different variegation pattern from plant 1; the cream sectors on this one stripe across the leaf rather than chevron from the tip.
- Light
- Bright filtered light, no direct sun. Variegated armstrongii burns within hours of unfiltered exposure and the burn marks never disappear.
- Water
- Modest, with full dry-down. The variegated form runs on less photosynthesis than the green species; reduce watering accordingly.
- Soil
- Pumice-dominant mineral mix with a small organic fraction. The species roots are fine and prefer texture over fertility.
- Dormancy
- Winter-rainfall rhythm — cool-season active, summer-rest. This is the more common armstrongii pattern and the variegated form follows it strictly.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10a–11 (40°F dry floor; variegated material is slightly less cold-tolerant than the green species).
- Feeding
- Quarter strength balanced fertilizer once a month during the cool active season. Never push variegated Gasteria.
- Repotting
- Every three to four years. The species is slow and resents disturbance.
