Bursera oderata in a 6-inch pot — a Mexican dry-tropical tree relative with aromatic resin and characteristic peeling bark. The species name notes the scent: snap a twig and it perfumes the bench. Excellent candidate for caudex-style bonsai over time.

- Full sun in the active season, brightest filtered light through dormancy. Bursera color and bark develop only with sun.
- Water
- Moderate summer drinks, with full dry-down. Underwater rather than overwater; Bursera tolerate drought far better than wet feet.
- Soil
- Sharply drained mineral mix with a small organic fraction. A bonsai-style bark and pumice mix suits the species' root preferences.
- Dormancy
- Drought-deciduous, leaves dropping with cooler, drier conditions. Hold water through the leafless period; the bark seals and the wood firms during the rest.
- Hardiness
- USDA 10b–11 (45°F dry floor; more cold-tolerant than its tropical cousins but still no frost).

- Quarter to half strength balanced fertilizer monthly during active growth. Heavy feeding produces weak, fast growth that loses Bursera character.
